Tashkent: Iraq head coach Emad Mohammed was in a joyful mood after his side squeezed into the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ Uzbekistan 2023 quarter-finals following a 1-1 draw with Syria in their last match of Group A on Wednesday.
Despite a dominant performance, the Lions of Mesopotamia could only find the back of the net once at Lokomotiv Stadium through Hayder Abdulkareem’s second goal of the tournament. The midfielder headed in after Kadhim Raad’s initial header bounced off the crossbar and back into play, but Zakaria Al Ramadan drew Syria level in added time.
The draw was enough for Iraq to qualify to the next round, joining group winners Uzbekistan and pipping Indonesia to second place on head-to-head record.
Tashkent: Iraq head coach Emad Mohammed is eyeing gradual elimination of mistakes from his players’ game as they take on neighbours Syria in a decisive Group A encounter on Matchday Three of the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ Uzbekistan 2023.
The Lions of Mesopotamia enter the Tuesday game with more significant hopes of qualification to the next round than their opponents, having collected three points against Indonesia in the opening match before losing 1-0 to hosts Uzbekistan.
A win will confirm Iraq’s place in the next round regardless of the result of the simultaneous clash between Uzbekistan and Indonesia in Fergana, while any other result could complicate matters for Mohammed’s men.
Tashkent: Indonesia head coach Shin Tae-yong said he wants his players to be more ruthless in front of goal after his side handed Syria a 1-0 defeat on Saturday that keeps alive their hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds of the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ Uzbekistan 2023.
Hokky Caraka’s superb breakaway effort 10 minutes before halftime was the difference between the teams at Lokomotiv Stadium and earned the Indonesians their first win of the campaign after defeat in their opener against Iraq earlier in the week.
The win means Shin’s team sit level on three points with the Iraqis, three behind Group A leaders Uzbekistan while the Syrians also retain slim hopes of advancing to the last eight of the competition.
Group A: Indonesia stay in the hunt with triumph over Syria
Tashkent: Hokky Caraka’s goal of the tournament contender saw Indonesia pull themselves back into the battle for a place in the knockout rounds of the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ Uzbekistan 2023 as Shin Tae-yong’s side defeated Syria 1-0 at Lokomotiv Stadium on Saturday.
Caraka’s 35th minute solo strike ensured the Indonesians bounced back from the disappointment of their opening Group A loss against Iraq and keeps the FIFA U20 World Cup hosts in contention for a place in the quarter-finals.
The performance was an improved showing from the Garuda Muda, who shaded a tight first half that featured few scoring opportunities until Caraka’s determination and quality finish delivered what turned out to be the game’s only goal.
Tashkent: Indonesia head coach Shin Tae-yong will look to keep his players’ spirits high in the lead-up to their AFC U20 Asian Cup™ Uzbekistan 2023 Group A meeting with Syria on Saturday as the Garuda Muda attempt to bounce back from their opening day loss at the hands of Iraq.
Shin’s team slipped to a 2-0 defeat against the Iraqis on Wednesday but showed plenty of positive signs throughout the 90 minutes at Lokomotiv Stadium to give the former Korea Republic head coach encouragement ahead of their crucial clash with the Syrians.
Khaydarov: Uzbekistan can still improve despite Syria triumph
Tashkent: Uzbekistan head coach Ravshan Khaydarov believes his side have more to offer despite marching to an emphatic 2-0 victory over Syria in their first match of the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ Uzbekistan 2023 on Wednesday.
Getting their home campaign underway, Uzbekistan bagged a goal in each half, opening the scoring with a magnificent Abbosbek Fayzullaev free-kick from an angle in the 37th minute. The attacker’s delivery from the corner in the second half was inadvertently sent into the net by Syria’s Zakaria Al Ramadan to confirm Uzbekistan’s triumph.
A loud crowd at Bunyodkor Stadium enjoyed an exciting opening ceremony before propelling their side to a comfortable victory.
