Vietnam’s Huynh Nhu confident of Asia’s rise

Kuala Lumpur: Huynh Nhu’s longevity in women’s football with various clubs and the Vietnam national team marks her as the poster figure for budding players in the football-mad Southeast Asian country.

Huynh Nhu has served her nation with honour and diligence for 15 years, a career path that she has no regrets taking ever since the opportunity opened up to her to be a professional player at the age of 17.

While a large chunk of her career was spent with Ho Chi Minh City Women’s FC, Huynh Nhu has had the opportunity to play two years in Portugal in 2022 with Vilaverdense FC, a period which opened her eyes to the potential of Asian players.

Saudi Arabia 2026 hopefuls discover road to glory

Kuala Lumpur: The teams vying for the title learnt their Group Stage challengers following the AFC U17 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026™ Official Draw at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Thursday.

The 16 teams were divided into four groups with the tournament to be contested between between May 5 and 22, 2026.

Kuala Lumpur: The 12 hopefuls for the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup China 2026™ discovered their road to continental glory following the Official Draw at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Thursday.

The 12 teams - expanded from eight - were divided into three groups with the tournament to be contested between May 1 and 17, 2026.

R16 (1st Leg): Cong An Ha Noi FC (VIE) 4-0 Tampines Rovers FC (SGP)

Hanoi: Cong An Ha Noi will take a commanding lead into the second leg of their AFC Champions League Two 2025/26™ Round of 16 tie with Tampines Rovers next week after handing the Singaporean side a 4-0 defeat at Hang Day Stadium on Wednesday.

Vietnam international playmaker Nguyen Quang Hai scored twice in three first-half minutes to put Mano Polking’s side in control, netting in the 24th and 27th minutes before Rogerio Alves hit his side’s third with eight minutes remaining in the first half.

Nguyen Dinh Bac scored the fourth in stoppage time at the end of the game to move Cong An Ha Noi to the cusp of a place in the quarter-finals. The two teams will face off again in Singapore next week with Noh Rahman’s side facing an uphill task against the V.League 1 outfit.

Kuala Lumpur: There are few things in life more precious to Mai Duc Chung than the betterment of football in Vietnam, so even though he had already decided to step away in 2023, the lure of the game proved too difficult to resist.

Head coach of the national team for seven years - the highlight of which was guiding Vietnam to their first FIFA Women’s World Cup Finals in 2023, Mai decided it was time to hand the reins to fresh hands.

His boots, however, were hard to fill and with no replacement found, Vietnam Football Federation turned once again to one of their favourites sons and the call was answered with a sense of great duty and pride.
