Stronger support for AFC MAs and RAs underlined by Shaikh Salman

Kuala Lumpur: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC)’s commitment towards uplifting its Member Associations (MAs) and Regional Associations (RAs) was further emphasised at the 35th AFC Congress 2025, which concluded today in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

At the outset, the AFC President conveyed the condolences of the Asian football family to the communities affected by the ongoing conflict in Palestine as well as those impacted in Myanmar and Thailand following the devastating earthquake which has tragically claimed more than 3,000 lives.

Spotlight on the 35th AFC Congress 2025

Kuala Lumpur: The stage is set for the 35th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress, which will return to the home of Asian football in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, April 12, 2025.

To be held at the Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur, the 35th AFC Congress will vote on the Audited Financial Statements and Auditors’ Report for the year 2024, which saw the AFC deliver a historic 16 competitions, including the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™, and usher a new dawn with the commencement of its revamped club competitions.

AFC Congress elects two new members to the AFC Executive Committee

Bangkok: The 34th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress concluded on Thursday in Bangkok, Thailand with the AFC’s Member Associations electing by acclamation two new members to the AFC Executive Committee for the remainder of the 2023 to 2027 term.

Ms. Mijgona Mahmadalieva from Tajikistan was elected as the Female AFC Executive Committee member for the Central Zone whilst Mr. Chung Mong Gyu from the Korea Republic was elected as an AFC Executive Committee for the East Zone.

Taking place at a prestigious ceremony following the conclusion of the 34th AFC Congress 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand, a suite of dynamic brands was presented for each of the four new competitions: the AFC Champions League Elite™ (ACL Elite), AFC Women’s Champions League™ (AWCL), AFC Champions League Two™ (ACL Two) and AFC Challenge LeagueTM (ACGL).

Bangkok: The 34th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress underlined its resounding support for the Palestine Football Association (PFA) here in Bangkok, Thailand, on Thursday.

With the AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa reaffirming his unwavering commitment to the PFA, the 47-member Congress fully backed the PFA’s legitimate proposal to seek a swift and effective resolution, in line with the regulations and statutes of the AFC and FIFA, to the ongoing systematic violations of FIFA’s and AFC’s statutory objectives, and the horrendous loss of innocent lives in the ongoing war on Gaza that continues to dominate global headlines.

Australia and Uzbekistan confirmed as 2026 and 2029 AFC Women’s Asian Cup™ hosts

Bangkok: Australia and Uzbekistan have been confirmed as the hosts of the 2026 and 2029 editions of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup™ respectively after the AFC Executive Committee today ratified the AFC Women’s Football Committee’s recommendations at its third meeting held in Bangkok, Thailand, on the eve of the 34th AFC Congress.

In congratulating both MAs, AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said: “On behalf of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), I would like to thank the other three initial bidders for the 2026 edition – Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan – for submitting their interests and I offer our sincere congratulations to Football Australia and the Uzbekistan Football Association on being confirmed as hosts of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup™ in 2026 and 2029 respectively.

Future in focus as FIFA President stresses Asia’s key role

Zurich: Football’s response to COVID-19, the international match calendar and future competitions were among the topics covered as FIFA President Gianni Infantino spoke via video link to the 30th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress. 

 “We have shown strength, unity and solidarity, and this was the only way to cope with COVID, ” said the FIFA President, in thanking the AFC’s executive and members for their support through a difficult year.
“At FIFA, we’ve been able to set up a COVID Relief Fund to the global value of USD 1.5 billion. This is unprecedented, and no other sports organisation is coming anywhere close to that. 
“For me, as well as for all FIFA Council members, it was immediately clear that because we can help we should help. That’s what we have done with the COVID Relief Fund, not just for the professional game but also for the women’s game, for the grassroots game, to keep football alive all over the world because that’s our mission and our task.”

AFC Congress approves NMIFA’s membership

Kuala Lumpur: Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President, congratulated the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association (NMIFA) on becoming the 47th full Member Association of the AFC at the 30th AFC Congress today.

The online Congress, which observed a minutes’ silence of respect for Diego Armando Maradona and the legends of Asian football who have passed in the last year, approved the application of the NMIFA, which has been an Associate Member of the AFC since July 2009.
