ASEAN Wrap: Champions face early tests across six leagues

Kuala Lumpur: Defending champions featured prominently across ASEAN this week, with Johor Darul Ta’zim and Cong An Ha Noi FC extending their perfect starts, while Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng FC also continued their winning run in Cambodia. 

Persija Jakarta, meanwhile, claimed a dramatic late victory over defending champions Persib Bandung in Indonesia.

Buriram United were held by Chiangrai United in Thailand, while Lion City Sailors fought back from two goals down to draw with Hougang United in Singapore. The-AFC.com takes a look at the latest domestic action across ASEAN.

Qualifiers - Group J: Chinese Taipei 2-0 Singapore; Bhutan 7-0 Macau

Thimphu: Chinese Taipei clinched top spot in Group J after defeating Singapore 2-0 in the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027™ Qualifiers Development Phase on Sunday.

Second half strikes from Sung Chi-Chan maintained Chinese Taipei’s perfect record with Singapore claiming second place.

Bhutan registered their first win after sailing 7-0 past Macau to finish third in the standings.

Qualifiers - Group J: Macau, China 0-1 Singapore; Bhutan 1-2 Chinese Taipei

Thimphu: Singapore and Chinese Taipei confirmed their berths after staying unbeaten in their AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027™ Qualifiers Development Phase Group J fixtures at the Changlimithang Stadium on Thursday.

Singapore defeated Macau, China 1-0, while Chinese Taipei held off a battling Bhutan 2-1 to secure their berth in the qualification rounds for the AFC U20 Asian Cup 2029.

Both sides will face off on Sunday to decide the group winners.

Uzbekistan 2027 hopefuls discover qualification path

Kuala Lumpur: Teams aiming to vie for the AFC U17 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2027™ title discovered their Qualifiers challenge following the Draw at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Thursday.

The 35 teams were divided into seven groups of five to contest a single round-robin centralised league for the qualifying rounds that run from November 8 to 20, 2026.

The seven group winners will join the nine AFC representatives from the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026 who have automatically qualified - Australia, China PR, Japan (defending champions), Korea Republic, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam - in the Finals.

Yangon: Ruriko Takashima struck two stunning goals as FC Jurong concluded their AFC Women’s Champions League 2026/27™ Preliminary Stage campaign with a 2-1 win against No Limits FC on Sunday.

The win meant Singapore's Jurong finished third in Group F with three points while Lebanon's No Limits departed with three defeats.

Yangon: New Taipei City Hang Yuan FC kept their AFC Women's Champions League 2026/27™ hopes alive with a 2-1 win over FC Jurong in their Preliminary Stage Group F tie on Thursday.

The side from Chinese Taipei will square off against Myanmar's Ayeyawady FC - Women, who are also on six points, on Sunday to decide the group winners.

Thailand survive Singapore fightback to advance

Bangkok: Thailand advanced to the final of the ASEAN Championship 2026 despite slipping to a 2-1 loss against Singapore in Bangkok on Tuesday as Anthony Hudson’s side completed a 4-3 aggregate win to progress to the two-legged decider.

Kakana Khamyok’s 61st minute penalty proved decisive, the spot-kick levelling the scores after Harhys Stewart had given Singapore a 45th minute lead only for Pansa Hemviboon’s own goal to restore the visitors’ one-goal advantage.

Gavin Lee’s side were unable to find their way through the Thai defence for a third time, however, and Thailand will face either Vietnam or Malaysia in the home-and-away final in their quest for a record-extending eighth title.

Yangon: Ayeyawady FC - Women got off to a resounding start in the AFC Women’s Champions League 2026/27™ Preliminary Stage as they outplayed FC Jurong of Singapore 4-0 at the Thuwunna Football Stadium on Monday. 

Myanmar’s Ayeyawady, making their first Continental appearance, dominated their fellow debutants and will look to reproduce their performance against No Limits FC of Lebanon on Thursday while Jurong will look to do better against New Taipei City Hang Yuan FC.

Singapore: Seven-time champions Thailand will take a 3-1 lead into the second leg of their ASEAN Championship 2026 semi-final against Singapore after Anthony Hudson’s side cruised to victory at Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday.

Teerasak Poeiphimai scored twice in the opening 26 minutes to send the visitors on their way to a commanding victory before Shawal Anuar saw his penalty saved for the home side and Seksan Ratree hit Thailand’s third in the 51st minute.

Substitute Ilhan Fandi provided Singapore with a late lifeline through his strike from distance six minutes from time. The teams will meet again in Bangkok on Tuesday with the Singaporeans facing a significant task to advance to the country’s first final since 2012.

Riyadh: Trailing by a goal in their penultimate fixture of the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ Qualifiers Final Round, Singapore’s hopes were fading fast in front of a near-capacity home crowd.

Defeat to Hong Kong, China in the winner-takes-all showdown would eliminate the Lions via the head-to-head criterion and extend an absence from Asia’s crown jewel that dates back to their debut in 1984, while sealing back-to-back qualifications for the home side.

But a two-goal salvo within five minutes saw Gavin Lee’s charges flip the script and stun the hosts, as they held on for a historic victory last November that sealed a maiden qualification on merit to the AFC Asian Cup™.
