Brisbane: Brisbane Roar have signed Australian-born Greece international Avram Papadopoulos ahead of their AFC Champions League Group Stage campaign.
The 32-year-old central defender is set to step in for Daniel Bowles who will need surgery after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in the game against Melbourne City last Saturday.
Papadopoulos, who was born in Melbourne but grew up in Greece, has been capped 37 times by the European nation and last played for J.League club Jubilo Iwata in November.
He started his professional career with Aris Thessaloniki before joining Olympiacos in 2008, winning five league titles with the Greek Super League giants.
Papadopoulos then transferred to Turkish side Trabzonspor before making his move to Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai Shenhua.
Brisbane are in Group E of the AFC Champions League with Japan’s 2016 double champions Kashima Antlers, Thai League winners Muangthong United and Korea Republic side Ulsan Hyundai. Their first match will be against Muangthong on February 21.
