Guangzhou: 2103 AFC Champions League winners Guangzhou Evergrande have named Luiz Felipe Scolari as their new coach following the shock departure of Fabio Cannavaro.
The news comes in the wake of Guangzhou’s 2-2 Chinese Super League (CSL) draw with Tianjin Teda on Thursday, a result which left the reigning domestic champions top of the table on goal difference, but also brought about Cannavro’s exit.
The Italian, who had been at Guangzhou for six months since replacing compatriot Marcello Lippi at the helm, confirmed the news on Twitter, saying: "I announce that earlier today (Thursday) I have reached an agreement for the consensual resolution of the contract with Guangzhou Evergrande.
“Thanks all the executives and all the players for the wonderful experience.”
Scolari, no stranger to Asia following his stint with Uzbekistan side Bunyodkor where he won the 2009 league title, is scheduled to arrive in China next week to meet his new charges, before the 2002 FIFA World Cup winner oversees Guangzhou's next CSL fixture away at Shandong Luneng on June 20.
Guangzhou will continue their current AFC Champions League campaign in August after reaching the last eight thanks to a 3-2 aggregate success over Korea Republic’s Seongnam FC in the Round of 16.
