AFC Cup™ 2022: ASEAN Zonal Semi-finals in Numbers

Kuala Lumpur: The Southeast Asian participants in the AFC Cup™ 2022 has been reduced to two teams following the conclusion of this week’s ASEAN Zonal Semi-finals.

PSM Makassar of Indonesia defeated Kedah Darul Aman of Malaysia in a narrow 2-1 win on Tuesday, before Kuala Lumpur City edged Vietnam’s Viettel FC on penalties the day after following a goalless draw in Ho Chi Minh City. 

Before the two victors face one another on August 24 to crown the best ASEAN team in this year’s AFC Cup and a ticket to the Inter-Zone Semi-final against India’s ATK Mohun Bagan, the-AFC.com highlights some of the standout numbers from this week’s two ties.

Teamwork makes the dream work for Kuala Lumpur City

Ho Chi Minh City: Head coach Bojan Hodak praised his Kuala Lumpur City FC side for their incredible fighting spirit, which saw them hold off a fierce Viettel FC for 120 minutes before securing a 6-5 penalty shootout win in the AFC Cup™ 2022 ASEAN Zonal Semi-finals on Wednesday. 

The result means the 2021 Malaysia Cup winners will face PSM Makassar of Indonesia, who beat Kedah Darul Aman in the other semi-final, in the ASEAN Zonal final on August 24.

Bali: Head coach Bernardo Tavares hailed his PSM Makassar charges for their 2-1 win over Kedah Darul Aman in the AFC Cup™ 2022 ASEAN Zonal Semi-final at the Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium on Tuesday.

PSM, who played with 10 men in the final half hour before being reduced further just before the final whistle, came out tops to become the first Indonesian side to advance to the AFC Cup ASEAN Zonal Final.

Kuala Lumpur: A record six clubs from as many Member Associations (MAs) will compete in another thrilling AFC Women’s Club Championship™ – Pilot Tournament campaign as teams from both the East and West regions prepare to battle for the title.

The expanded competition will be held across two regions for the first time, with the East starting on August 15, 2022, followed by the West, five days later before culminating in a Final between the two champions in conjunction with the AFC Cup™ 2022 Final on October 22.

San Jose: Korea Republic produced a second half show to defeat Canada 2-0 in their FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica 2022 Group C fixture at the National Stadium of Costa Rica on Thursday.

After a goalless first half, Korea Republic took a firm grip in the second half thanks to an own goal by Canada’s Brooklyn Jean Courtnall before Moon Hae-yoon sealed the three points.

Korea Republic lead the standings on goal difference, ahead of Nigeria, who defeated France by a solitary goal.

Alajuela: Japan kicked off their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title defence with a 1-0 win over Netherlands in Group D on Thursday. 

Yuzuki Yamamoto’s first half goal proved enough for the young Nadeshiko to bag all three points to sit second behind USA, who beat Ghana 3-0 in the day’s earlier fixture.

Japan will face Ghana next on Sunday.
