Kuala Lumpur: The AFC Cup™ 2023-24 season is edging closer as the competition returns to its usual home-and-away format for the first time in four years. 

Al Seeb Club became the first Omani side to lift the title when they beat Kuala Lumpur City FC 3-0 in last season’s final at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
 
This time round, 36 clubs from across the continent will compete in the final edition of the tournament. As the big kick-off on September 18 approaches, the-AFC.com takes a trip down memory lane to look at the history of the AFC Cup.

Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds were crowned Asian champions for the third time when they edged Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal SFC in their third meeting in an AFC Champions League final in six seasons, but 38 clubs from across Asia will challenge the two 2022 finalists for the coveted title this campaign. 
 
The 2023/24 competition will be the most star-studded edition yet, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Karim Benzema among those set to make their debuts in Asia. As the big kick-off on September 18 draws nearer, the-AFC.com revisits the AFC Champions League’s storied history.
