Ong targets extended run for Sabah

Singapore: Sabah FC booked their spot in the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 ASEAN Zonal semi-finals on Thursday and the focus now will be on ensuring their run in the competition goes beyond that. 

Head coach Ong Kim Swee, while pleased to see his team secure a 4-1 win over Singapore’s Hougang United which confirmed them as Group H winners, is keen to emulate what fellow Malaysian sides Kuala Lumpur City FC and Johor Darul Ta’zim did previously in the competition.
 
Kuala Lumpur reached the AFC Cup final in 2022 while JDT went all the way, lifting the prestigious trophy in 2015.

Group E: Altyn Asyr FC (TKM) 2-4 FK Abdysh-Ata Kant (KGZ)

Ashgabat: Abdysh-Ata Kant secured the top spot in Group E and a place in the Inter-Zone semi-finals with a dramatic comeback against Altyn Asyr to win 4-2 in the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 on Thursday.

Down 2-0, the Kyrgyz Republic side showed tremendous resilience to fight back for the win against their opponents from Turkmenistan.

Group H: Hougang United (SGP) 1-4 Sabah FC (MAS)

Singapore: Sabah FC sealed their place in the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 ASEAN Zonal semi-finals with a game to spare after a 4-1 win over Singapore's Hougang United on Thursday.

The win ensured Ong Kim Swee's side will finish top of Group H after the PSM Makassar-Hai Phong FC tie ended 1-1, with the Malaysians having an unassailable 12 points.

Ashgabat: FC Merw and Ravshan shared the points in a 1-1 draw in Group E of the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 at Multi-functional Stadium on Thursday. 

Next up, Merw will face Abdish-Ata while Ravshan host Altyn Asyr as Group E comes to a close.

Group H: PSM Makassar (IDN) 1-1 Hai Phong FC (VIE)

Bali: Goals from Yakob Sayuri and Lucao saw Indonesia’s PSM Makassar and Hai Phong of Vietnam split the points as they drew 1-1 at Capt I Wayan Dipta Stadium in the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 on Thursday.

Following an opening 45 minutes without a goal, Lucao found the breakthrough in the 74th minute but the visitors were pegged back just three minutes later courtesy of Sayuri’s free-kick.

With the spoils shared in this Group H Matchday Five tie, it remains as you were ahead of the final round of group stage fixtures with both sides locked on the same number of points, although Haiphong remain in second courtesy of their superior head-to-head record.

Phnom Penh: Phnom Penh Crown FC matched Australia’s Macarthur FC on 12 points at the top of Group F of the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 after the Cambodian champions defeated Dynamic Herb Cebu FC 4-0 at Phnom Penh Olympic Stadium on Thursday. 

Shintaro Shimizu opened the scoring for the home side in the 12th minute before Yudai Ogawa netted with a free kick in the 29th minute to double Phnom Penh’s lead. Substitute Lim Pisoth then added to the score twice in the second half to seal a decisive victory for Oleg Starynskyi’s side.

Kaohsiung: Ange Samuel Kouame struck 12 minutes from time to send Tainan City’s on their way to a 3-0 win over Ulaanbataar on Thursday and keep his side’s hopes of claiming a place in the next phase of the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 alive.

Kouame scored from the edge of the area before injury time goals from Lin Ming-wei and Lin Wei-chieh earned the side from Chinese Taipei their second win of the campaign and move to within six points of leaders Taichung Futuro having played one game fewer.

Group F: Macarthur FC (AUS) 4-0 Shan United FC (MYA)

Pathum Thani: Macarthur kept on track for a place in the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 ASEAN Zonal semi-finals after their 4-0 win over Shan United at Pathum Thani Stadium.

Following an opening 45 minutes without a goal, the Australian side sprang to life after the half-time break as Daniel De Silva opened the scoring not long after restarting, before Jake Holman on 57 minutes and Tomislav Usok on 63 minutes increased Macarthur’s advantage.
 
Jerry Skotadis' stoppage time goal made sure of the three points and saw Mile Sterjovski’s outfit remain top of Group F on 12 points ahead of the later game in Group F between Phnom Penh Crown and Dynamic Herb Cebu.

Kaohsiung: Kaoru Takayama’s stoppage time free-kick earned Taichung Futuro a 1-0 win over Macau’s MUST CPK on Thursday in Group I of the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 after the visitors had seen Niki Torrao’s first-half penalty saved by Kenya Mitsui.

Takayama curled his set-piece over the wall and beyond goalkeeper Batista to ensure Taichung grabbed all three points to stay on top of the standings ahead of Ulaanbaatar’s meeting with Tainan City later in the day.
