Son stars as Korea Republic beat USA; Japan, Mexico draw

New York: Son Heung-min scored one goal and set up another to spark Korea Republic's 2-0 victory over the United States in an international football friendly on Saturday.

The matchup between two teams bound for the 2026 World Cup was played at Harrison, New Jersey, in the home stadium of MLS's New York Red Bulls.

 

Son scored in the 18th minute and Lee Dong-gyeong added another in the 43rd to secure Korea Republic's triumph against a US side coached by Mauricio Pochettino - Son's former boss at Tottenham Hotspur.

Kuala Lumpur: Thailand, Malaysia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates all achieved victories in their respective international friendlies as part of their preparations towards important qualifying tournaments.

Malaysia carved out a 2-1 win against Singapore at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium with Stuart Wilkin (24th) and Joao Figueiredo (54th) giving the home side a 2-0 lead before Ilhan Fandi (72nd) pulled a goal back for the visitors.

Both sides are gearing up for the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027™ Qualifiers Final Round Matchday Three in October.

Tashkent: Uzbekistan marched into the final of the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup with a 4-0 win against Kyrgyz Republic on Friday.

With Oman picking up a 2-1 win against Turkmenistan earlier in the day, Uzbekistan needed to win by two goals or more to advance and they achieved their target in convincing fashion, setting up a final date with Islamic Republic of Iran on Monday.

Hisor: Islamic Republic of Iran finished top of Group B after being held to a 2-2 draw by Tajikistan, to book their place in the final of the CAFA Nations Cup 2025 on Thursday.

Iran advanced with seven points, three ahead of India, whose 0-0 stalemate against Afghanistan means they will face either Oman or Uzbekistan in the third-place playoff.
