AFC strengthens Statutes and formalises regional partnerships

Kuala Lumpur: The 28th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress today approved changes to its Statutes, which align the AFC with the highest principles of good governance.

The AFC Congress overwhelmingly approved the recognition of the five Asian Regional Associations and ‘welcomed them as partners’ in delivering the AFC’s Vision and Mission in the years ahead.

Also approved was a change in the Statutes which requires candidates for the office of the AFC President to be nominated by at least three Member Associations – but not necessarily by the Member Association they represent.

AFC President reiterates importance of fair elections 

Kuala Lumpur: Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the AFC President, has called for ‘fair play’ in next year’s AFC and FIFA Elections without ‘third party interference.’

Speaking at the closing of the 28th AFC Congress, Shaikh Salman told the AFC delegates that the next time they all meet would be for the elections, which will be held on April 6, 2019 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The AFC President said: “As you know our elections are always based on the spirit of fair play. Like in football, the rules and regulations must be respected.

“In Asia and particularly here at the AFC, we have built a positive reputation and image in the last five years. We do not need nor do we want any third party interference or influence in our elections. We need to be strong on this matter.”

AFC announces support for new FIFA competitions

Kuala Lumpur: AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa announced the support of the Asian football family for the FIFA President, as well as FIFA’s proposal to revamp and introduce new competitions for the benefit of the global game.

Shaikh Salman said: “In the last two and a half years, FIFA, like the AFC, has made remarkable progress – particularly in governance and competitions.
“And we believe that there is still work to do and that you are the man to complete the task. You can count on Asia.
“I would like to congratulate FIFA and the FIFA President on an outstanding FIFA World Cup this summer in Russia.
“During the great celebration of football, Asia had a record number of teams and a record number of officials. For Asia it was another giant stride forward.
“This progress has been made possible not only by the dedication of the staff of Member Associations and the AFC but also by the unity of the sport in Asia.”

New building inauguration underlines rise of Asian football

Kuala Lumpur: Asian football marked another ground-breaking milestone of remarkable progress today as the AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa and FIFA President Gianni Infantino officially inaugurated the AFC New Building at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

In a grand ceremony, the inauguration was also attended by members of the AFC Executive Committee as well as Presidents and General Secretaries from across the AFC's 47 Member Associations.

The expansion, which sees the AFC House increase its footprint by another 200,000 square feet, has been financed through the FIFA Forward fund and will further strengthen the AFC’s ambitions, through its Vision and Mission, to support its Member Associations with greater efficiency.
