Kerr voted the best female footballer in the world

Sydney: Australia captain Sam Kerr has been voted the best female footballer in the world after topping the Guardian's top 100 list for 2019. 

Kerr finished second in 2018, but a brilliant year for club and country has seen her rise to the top, finishing ahead of Lucy Bronze (England) and Megan Rapinoe (USA).

London: Chelsea Football Club Women have announced the signing of Australian forward Sam Kerr on a two-and-a-half year deal.

The 26-year-old international will join up with the Blues when the mid-season transfer window opens, linking up with the squad for the second half of the 2019/20 Women’s Super League season.

Kerr had previously split her playing time between Perth Glory in the Australian W-League from October to April and Chicago Red Stars in America’s National Women’s Soccer League from April to September.

Sydney: Sam Kerr scored both of her team’s goals as Australia defeated Chile 2-1 in front of a record home crowd in their international friendly on Saturday.

A total 20,029 fans saw the Matildas captain guide her side to victory in their first outing since the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019, opening the scoring in the third minute before adding a second in the 72nd minute, only for Camila Sáez to pull a goal back as Chile mounted a late challenge.

Ante Milicic’s side will meet the Chileans again in Adelaide on Tuesday, before turning their attention to February’s Tokyo 2020 Olympic Qualifiers.

Australia's women footballers get landmark equal pay deal

Sydney: Women footballers playing for Australia's national team will earn the same as their male counterparts under a deal unveiled on Wednesday and hailed as landmark for gender equality in sport.

Under a new centralised contract system announced by Football Federation Australia (FFA), Matildas stars such as Sam Kerr and Ellie Carpenter will be paid an equal amount as big-name Socceroos like Aaron Mooy and Mat Ryan.

They will also be afforded business class flights to international fixtures and tournaments, like the men.

"Football is the game for everyone, and this new collective bargaining agreement is another huge step toward ensuring that we live the values of equality, inclusivity and opportunity," said FFA chairman Chris Nikou.

Cary: Australia’s Sam Kerr and Japan’s Yuki Nagasato were denied a National Women’s Soccer League Championship after their Chicago Red Stars outfit fell to a 4-0 Play-off Final defeat against North Carolina Courage on Sunday.

With 27 league goals between them, the Kerr-Nagasato partnership had been instrumental in taking Chicago to the decider, but they had little answer as their opponents produced a superb performance to retain the title they had won in 2018.

Cary: Sam Kerr’s ever-expanding career trophy haul grew once again on Friday, as the star Australian striker was named the 2019 Most Valuable Player for the US-based National Women’s Soccer League.

Kerr’s most recent accolade is her second NWSL MVP Award after she was also voted the league’s outstanding player in 2017.

She has also won the Golden Boot Award for the league’s top scorer for the past three seasons, in addition to a swag of individual honours in Australia’s W-League.

Paris: Two of Asia’s biggest stars have been shortlisted among the world’s best players, with Korea Republic’s Son Heung-min and Australia’s Sam Kerr nominated in their respective categories for the prestigious honour awarded by France Football.

Son was one of 30 players to make the final shortlist in the men’s category, while Kerr was one of 20 to be selected on the women’s side.

Spanish-based Korean youngster Lee Kang-in was also among nominees, earning a place on the 10-man shortlist for the Kopa Trophy, which is awarded to the best performing player aged 21 or under.
