Singapore: Singapore-based Lions XII won the 2013 Malaysia Super League title with one round to spare after defeating FELDA United 4-0 in their penultimate fixture on Tuesday.
Despite dominating the opening exchanges at the Jalan Besar Stadium the Lions were unable to find their way past a packed FELDA defence and the home side needed an own-goal one minute after the interval to open their account, with striker Azrul Ahmad heading Shahril Ishak’s cross into his own net.
Shahril, who was the tournament MVP as Singapore won the AFF (ASEAN Football Federation) championship for a record fourth time last year, went from provider to scorer in the 58th minute before Fazrul Nawas made it 3-0 just three minutes later.
Shafiq Ghani sealed the win with seven minutes remaining to preserve the Lions’ unbeaten record at home and seal the 2013 Malaysian Super League title with an unassailable 43 points, four clear of both Selangor and Johor Darul Takzim who will battle it out for the runners-up position on Saturday.
Lions XII will bring the curtain down on a successful campaign with the league champions take on FA Cup winners Kelantan.
