Kuwait City: Defender Ahmad Al Salih (pic) scored a solitary winner in the 74th minute as Syria edged Iraq 1-0 to win the WAFF Championship 2012 title at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Kuwait on Thursday.
After playing 1-1 draw during the group stages match, the final was for any side to grab but it was defender Al Salih who gave the precious title to the Syrians whose next task is to qualify in the AFC Asian Cup 2015.
The Syrians are in Group A alongside with neighbours Jordan, Oman and Singapore and their curtain raiser of the AFC Asian Cup 2015 qualifiers is against Oman on February.
Iraq are in Group C where they face West Asian neighbour Saudi Arabia, China and Indonesia.
Earlier, Oman won the third-place playoff match beating Bahrain 1-0 at the Al Naser Stadium. Syrian midfielder Hamdi Al Massri was adjudged the ‘Most Valuable Player’ of the tournament while striker Ahmad Al Douni topscored with four goals.
