Australia’s Karrys-Stahl: We play for our future generations

Hohhot: When Football Australia decided to form their first ever women’s national team to compete in the AFC Women’s Futsal Asian Cup™ China 2025 Qualifiers in late 2024, it was an opening that Alexia Karrys-Stahl could not pass up.

The small-sided game has been a part of her life since young, along with the 11-a-side version, but opportunities to pursue futsal had been few and far between compared to football. Karrys-Stahl turned out for Gungahlin United before being selected for the academy of Canberra United, for whom she made her A-League Women’s in the 2020/21 season. 

Her second stint in the A-League came in the 2023/24 campaign with 16 appearances for the Central Coast Mariners, after which followed the chance to don the Australia jersey again - having done so for the young Matildas at the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship Qualifiers 2015 - and Karrys-Stahl leapt at it.

Hohhot: Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan will both be desperately seeking victories in their final matches in Group A of the AFC Women’s Futsal Asian Cup™ China 2025 on Saturday.

With China PR needing only a draw to confirm their quarter-final spot, Chinese Taipei hold the advantage over Uzbekistan in the race to the knockout stage, having defeated the Central Asian side 6-1 in their opening match.

Chinese Taipei suffered a 5-3 defeat against China PR on Matchday Two while Uzbekistan beat Australia 3-1. 

Group B: Philippines 0-3 Vietnam

Hohhot: Vietnam made it two wins out of two after defeating Philippines 3-0 in their AFC Women’s Futsal Asian Cup™ China 2025 Group B tie on Friday.

With six points in the bag, Vietnam were assured of a quarter-final slot after Islamic Republic of Iran defeated Hong Kong, China 3-1 in the group’s later tie on Friday. 

Vietnam will face defending champions Iran to decide the group winners on Sunday.

Hohhot: Defending champions Islamic Republic of Iran secured their place in the quarter-finals after defeating Hong Kong, China 3-1 in their AFC Women’s Futsal Asian Cup™ China 2025 Group B tie on Friday.

The win took Iran to six points - level with Vietnam who also qualified - with the two to meet on Sunday to decide the group winners.

Hohhot:  Japan narrowly held on for a 3-2 win over Bahrain on Friday in the AFC Women’s Futsal Asian Cup™ China 2025 for a second straight victory in Group C.

A dominant first-half performance looked to have put them in cruise control, but the two-time runners-up were rocked by a spirited fight-back from Bahrain after the break at the Hohhot Sports Centre.

Hohhot: The spoils were shared between Thailand and Indonesia on Friday evening as their AFC Futsal Women’s Asian Cup™ China 2025 encounter ended in an entertaining 0-0 draw

There was nothing to separate the Southeast Asian pair – who drew 1-1 in their sole previous meeting in 2018 – at the Hohhot Sports Centre, which saw Thailand stay in second in Group C with four points while Indonesia picked up their first.

It was only the second time in tournament history that a match finished goalless, with Thailand also involved on that occasion in 2018 against Vietnam.

Hohhot: Taking the ball in her stride after a one-two with captain Chan Wing Sze, So Hoi Lam hurtled towards the opposition goal from the halfway line and unleashed a rocket of a shot into the back of the net to spark joyous celebrations from Hong Kong, China.

The reaction was understandable as the second-half strike made it 3-3 against Vietnam in their Group B encounter of the AFC Women’s Futsal Asian Cup™ China 2025 on Wednesday, with the East Asians having trailed 3-1 at half-time at the Hohhot Sports Centre.

Baghdad: Iraq have named Australian Graham Arnold as their new head coach ahead of next month’s vital AFC Asian Qualifiers™ – Road to 26 clashes with Korea Republic and Jordan as the nation seeks to secure qualification for the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1986.

Arnold replaces Jesus Casas, with the Iraqis in third place in Group B with two matches remaining.
