Japan denied by late Spain fightback

Goa: Japan's FIFA U17 Women's World Cup India 2022 campaign came to an end following a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

Momoko Tanikawa looked to have sealed Japan a semi-final spot only for the East Asian side to be stopped by a late Vicky Lopez brace as Spain kept their title defence on track.

In a captivating battle between two first-time finalists, first half goals from Ali Al Busaidi and Abdulaziz Al Maqbali put Al Seeb in control at the interval and a third from Muhsen Al Ghassani ensured the trophy remained in West Asia for the 16th time in the competition’s 18 editions.
