New Delhi: India came from two-goals down to draw 2-2 with the UAE on Thursday but the damage had already been done in Al Ain as the Gulf side advanced to the third round of 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying with a 5-2 aggregate victory.
Already leading 3-0 from the first leg, the UAE extended their advantage in the 39th minute when Mohamed Al Shehhi, scorer of his side's second goal at the Sheikh Khalifa International Stadium five days ago, beat India keeper Karanjit Singh, who was starting in place of suspended first choice keeper Subrata Pal.
Ali Al Wehaibi made it 2-0 on the night and 5-0 on aggregate in the 71st minute but a Jeje Lalpekhlua goal two minutes later and a Gouramangi Singh strike in stoppage time meant that India at least avoided defeat as the bowed out of the World Cup qualifiers at the second round stage.
