Sochi: Australia's outgoing coach Bert van Marwijk was left with mixed feelings after seeing the Socceroos bow out of the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 with a 2-0 defeat against Peru in Sochi on Tuesday.
Van Marwijk's team were again made to pay for their lack of a cutting edge and succumbed to goals from Andre Carrillo and Paolo Guerrero for the already-eliminated South Americans in this group finale.
They go home without a win, joining Peru in being eliminated in Group C as France and Denmark - who drew 0-0 in Moscow - both went through. Indeed, that result confirmed that even an Australian win here would have been in vain.

Sochi: The FIFA World Cup dream is over for Australia after Bert van Marwijk’s side were defeated 2-0 by Peru in Sochi on Tuesday but the Socceroos final stand at the Fisht Stadium did provide fans an unforgettable moment thanks to Tim Cahill.
When Cahill arrived into the fray for Tomi Juric in the 53rd minute, he became the first Socceroos player in history to play in four FIFA World Cups.
And although the 38-year-old was unable to provide Australia with another heroic FIFA World Cup moment on this occasion, Cahill’s unparalleled aerial ability was once again on display for the world to see.

Sochi: Australia's hopes of advancing to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Knockout Stage were dashed after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Peru on Tuesday, with the Socceroos ending their Group C campaign with one point.
The Socceroos needed a win to stand any chance of reaching the last 16 for the first time since 2006, but they were undone by Andre Carrillo's 18th-minute strike and Paolo Guerrero's goal early in the second half at the Fisht Stadium.
They go home without a win, joining Peru in being eliminated in Group C.
Peru were already out before this game but they still had a huge travelling support, clad in the country's distinctive white and red colours.
They made up the majority of the 44,073 crowd in sauna-like conditions by Russia's Black Sea coast, and the stadium exploded when Carrillo scored their first goal at a World Cup since 1982.
It was their first win in nine games at the tournament since they defeated Islamic Republic of Iran 4-1 in Argentina in 1978, and they will now hope to build on their performances in Russia after finally coming in from the international wilderness.

Kazan: As tests go, this could be the toughest yet for Korea Republic in their bid to keep their 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia campaign alive.
Up next for the Taeguk Warriors in their final Group F tie are defending champions Germany and nothing other than a win is what the East Asians need to have any hope of advancing to the Knockout Stage for just the third time.
Two defeats should have meant elimination for Shin Tae-yong's men but the group has seen some remarkable results and all four teams still have a chance of advancing to the Round of 16.
The odds, however, are stacked against Korea Republic as Germany showed just why they are a team for the big stage when they carved out a 2-1 win over Sweden in their second match.
Ironically, Toni Kroos' sensational late strike against Sweden is the reason why Korea Republic still have a chance to advance but that may also be the reason why Germany finally produced their real form.

Saransk: Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand has called for Carlos Queiroz to stay on as coach after Islamic Republic of Iran were knocked out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia despite drawing 1-1 with European champions Portugal on Monday.
Beiranvand saved a second half penalty from Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo after Ricardo Queresma had put the Portuguese in front and Karim Ansarifard’s penalty ensured the Iranians took a share of the spoils.
But while the result ensured Iran finished the World Cup with their best-ever haul of four points from three games, it was not enough to earn the country a spot in the knockout phase for the first time.

Volgograd: Salem Al Dawsari hailed his Saudi Arabia teammates after ensuring the Green Falcons left the 2018 FIFA World Cup with a victory under their belts when he scored the late winner in his nation’s 2-1 success over Egypt on Monday.
The win was the country’s first at the World Cup since their famous 1-0 victory over Belgium – courtesy of Saeed Al Owairan’s wonder goal – in Washington in 1994 and came courtesy of Al Dawsari’s 95th minute strike, when he fired low across Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary and into the far corner.
It was no more than the Saudis deserved after a campaign that started with a disappointing 5-0 loss to hosts Russia before a much more encouraging performance in a narrow 1-0 reversal against Uruguay.
That left Juan Antonio Pizzi’s side playing for pride in their final game in Group A and they can go home with their heads held high thanks to Al Dawsari’s late goal.
