Vidmar commends Australia’s strong mindset

Riyadh: Head coach Tony Vidmar praised Australia for their never-give-up mentality after a stunning 2-1 win over Iraq in their AFC U23 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026™ Group D match on Wednesday.

The Olyroos left it late, coming from behind to equalise through Yaya Dukuly and Mathias Macallister in time added on after trailing from the 63rd minute. The win saw them top the group with six points and took them to the quarter-finals after missing out in 2024.

Riyadh: Australia came from behind to defeat Iraq 2-1 in their AFC U23 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026™ Group D tie on Wednesday.

Trailing to Ammori Faisal’s 63rd minute penalty, Australia hit back in added on time through Yaya Dukuly and Mathias Macallister to advance in stunning fashion, topping the group with six points and setting up a quarter-final encounter with Korea Republic on Saturday.

Riyadh: Australia and Iraq are in for a do-or-die encounter for the knockout stage when they meet in their AFC U23 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026™ Group D match on Wednesday.

Tony Vidmar’s side are on three points, with Iraq adrift by one, and with China PR (four points) and Thailand (one) also in contention, it’s anyone’s guess as to which two teams advance. 

Australia displayed dominant form in their 2-1 defeat of Thailand. Despite doing the same against China PR, they failed to convert their chances and fell to a solitary goal.

Riyadh: Iraq head coach Emad Mohammed was proud of his young team for putting in maximum effort in the 1-1 stalemate with Thailand in their AFC U23 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026™ Group D match on Sunday.

The result left Group D wide open, with Iraq on two points - two behind China PR and one adrift of Australia. Thailand are a point behind Iraq, with Matchday Three to decide the teams advancing to the knockout round.

Riyadh: Thailand fought back to hold Iraq to a 1-1 draw in their AFC U23 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026™ Group D tie on Sunday.

The result left the group tantalisingly poised, with China PR on four points, Australia one adrift, Iraq third after two draws and Thailand with a single point. 

Thailand will face China PR on Wednesday while Iraq meet Australia.
