Groups finalised for #AFCU23 Qatar 2024 Qualifiers
Kuala Lumpur: The draw for the AFC U23 Asian Cup™ Qatar 2024 Qualifiers was finalised at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Thursday.
The hopefuls were divided into 11 groups – 10 groups of four teams each, with the last group containing three. Qatar, meanwhile, will play in the Qualifiers for exposure with their matches classified as friendlies.
Wins for Iraq, Oman as Group A goes down to the wire
Basra: Iraq and Oman scored important wins on Monday to set up an exciting finish to Group A of the 2023 Gulf Cup.
Iraq defeated Saudi Arabia 2-0 to move top of the standings ahead of Oman, who edged Yemen 3-2.
The victories took both teams to four points, with Saudi Arabia one adrift meaning they will have to defeat Oman in their final match while hosts Iraq will advance by avoiding a loss against eliminated Yemen.
Basra: Eight west Asian nations get their 2023 underway by competing at the 25th Gulf Cup, taking place in Iraq for the first time since 1979, with the hosts facing Oman in the opening match on Friday.
The pair are joined by Saudi Arabia and Yemen in Group A, while Group B sees reigning Gulf Cup champions Bahrain compete alongside Asian champions Qatar, record Gulf Cup winners Kuwait and the UAE, with the top two sides from each group advancing to the semi-finals.
Qualifiers - Group C: Japan edge Yemen to reach Finals
Vientiane: Japan defeated Yemen 1-0 to advance to the AFC U20 Asian Cup™ Uzbekistan 2023 Finals as Group C winners, while Palestine beat Laos 1-0 on Sunday.
Japan ended their qualifying campaign with a perfect record of four wins, scoring 22 goals and conceding none. Yemen, who finished second, will have to wait to know if they will advance to the Finals as one of the five best runners-up.
Palestine’s win, however, wasn’t enough to push them up the standings, as they finished third behind Yemen on goal difference.
