AFC Cup™ Final in Numbers

Kuala Lumpur: A new name will appear on the AFC Cup™ roll of honour after the 2022 final as a pair of debutants in Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur City FC and Oman’s Al Seeb Club face off for the right to be crowned kings of Asia. 

The competition’s 18th final sees Al Seeb aim to become Oman’s first-ever champions, while KL City are looking to follow in the footsteps of domestic rivals Johor Darul Ta’zim, who won the title back in 2015. 

Ahead of the showpiece event in the Malaysian capital on Saturday, October 22, the-AFC.com looks at some of the key numbers from the tournament final's history.

AFC Cup™ Final Flashback: When JDT were crowned Malaysia’s first Asian champions

Kuala Lumpur: Kuala Lumpur City FC are now just one victory away from winning a historic AFC Cup™ title – their fairytale run made all the more impressive by the fact that the Malaysia Super League club are in their debut campaign in the continental competition. 

Bojan Hodak’s side would lift the coveted silverware by beating Oman’s Al Seeb Club in the final on October 22, but the City Boys wouldn’t be the first side from Malaysia to win the AFC Cup. That honour belongs to Johor Darul Ta’zim, who got their hands on the trophy back in 2015 with Hodak also playing a key role in the success.

Hong Kong: It was an eventful week in East Asian football as Ulsan Hyundai secured their first K League 1 title since 2005 on Sunday and at the same time ended nine-time winners Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors’ hopes of claiming a sixth consecutive league trophy in Korea Republic. 

In Japan, Ventforet Kofu, a club languishing in 18th position of the 22-team second division, were crowned the champions of the Emperor’s Cup after stunning high-flying J1 League side Sanfrecce Hiroshima on penalties to also advance to the 2023-24 AFC Champions League group stage.

Navi Mumbai: Japan booked their place in the FIFA U17 Women's World Cup India 2022 quarter-finals with a 4-0 win over Canada on Saturday.
