Group A: Iraq down Qatar, UAE cruise past Yemen

Doha: A Mohammed Qasim brace steered Iraq to a 2-1 win against Qatar in the opening match of the 2019 Gulf Cup at Khalifa International Stadium on Tuesday.

Ali Mabkhout scored a hat-trick as United Arab Emirates defeated Yemen 3-0 to move to the top of the Group A standings as the 24th edition of the tournament got off to a spectacular start.

Stage set for thrilling competition as star-studded cast eye title

Doha: The 24th edition of the Gulf Cup is set to be a spectacular affair with eight teams vying for honours.

Hosts Qatar are in Group A with United Arab Emirates, Yemen and Iraq, while defending champions Oman, 10-time winners Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain are in Group B.

The top two sides from each group will advance to the semi-finals with the final on December 8 at the Khalifa International Stadium.

Yemen, Iraq arrive for challenge

Doha: Yemen and Iraq teams are the first to arrive for the 24th Gulf Cup, which will be held in Doha from November 26 to December 8. 

Yemen arrived in Doha on Thursday from Bahrain, where they played in an Asian Qualifiers group D tie against Singapore, suffering a 2-1 defeat.

Yemen will open their Gulf Cup campaign against United Arab Emirates on November 26, before playing hosts Qatar on November 29 and Iraq on December 2.

Iraq, meanwhile, arrived from Jordan, having defeated Islamic Republic of Iran and drawn with Jordan in Group C of the Asian Qualifiers the past week.

Tough draw for defending champions Oman

Doha: Gulf Cup defending champions Oman were handed a tough draw for the forthcoming 24th Gulf Cup on November 26-December 8 in Qatar.

Oman were drawn with 10-time winners Kuwait in Group B along with Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

Oman won their second title in January 2018 when the tournament was held in Kuwait after defeating UAE 5-4 on penalties in the final.

Katanec, Sousa satisfied with draw

Amman: Srečko Katanec said it was a case of one point earned rather than two lost after Iraq played to a goalless draw with Bahrain in Group C of the Asian Qualifiers on Tuesday.

The point kept Iraq top of the standings on 11 points, two ahead of Bahrain and five in front of Islamic Republic of Iran going into 2020.

The Iraq head coach said it was, given the circumstances a good result as the West Asians ended 2019 unbeaten in the Asian Qualifiers, having defeated Iran 2-1 on Matchday Five.
