Kuala Lumpur: Seven years after Johor Darul Ta’zim became the first side from both Malaysia and Southeast Asia to lift the AFC Cup™ title, Kuala Lumpur City FC are aiming to become the second when they face Oman’s Al Seeb Club at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on Saturday.

Just like their compatriots JDT during their victorious 2015 campaign, KL City have been on a rollercoaster journey to the final with tough away assignments and two penalty shootouts to navigate.
 
But that is exactly what they have done, creating history along the way for a club that was playing second-tier football two seasons ago before lifting their first Malaysia Cup title in 32 years in 2021 to qualify for the AFC Cup.
 
And up against fellow debutants Al Seeb, they will look to complete the magical run in front of home support in Kuala Lumpur. The-AFC.com relives the Malaysian outfit’s remarkable run to the 2022 AFC Cup final.

Philippines goalkeeper Mendoza signed for KL City last year and within the first 12 months helped them win the Malaysia Cup for the first time in 32 years after stunning domestic powerhouse Johor Darul Ta’zim in the final to qualify for their maiden AFC Cup.

AFC Cup™ win could transform Omani football, says Al Seeb's Dauda

Muscat: Winning the AFC Cup™ 2022 would be a game changer not just for Al Seeb SC, but for the entirety of Omani football, according to Ghanaian forward Cosmos Dauda.

The 29-year-old joined Al Seeb from Oman Club and has also previously represented Omani side Al Rustaq, in the process building a lot of experience and understanding of the game in the Sultanate.

Kuala Lumpur: Kuala Lumpur City FC are now just one victory away from winning a historic AFC Cup™ title – their fairytale run made all the more impressive by the fact that the Malaysia Super League club are in their debut campaign in the continental competition. 

Bojan Hodak’s side would lift the coveted silverware by beating Oman’s Al Seeb Club in the final on October 22, but the City Boys wouldn’t be the first side from Malaysia to win the AFC Cup.
