Bangkok: When Thailand lined up against United Arab Emirates at home in their third Asian Qualifiers outing in qualifying for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 on October 15, few gave Akira Nishino's hosts side any hopes of winning.
After all, the visitors boasted a dominant record having won four and drawn one in the two sides' past six World Cup qualifying meetings.
The game, however, ended in a surprise 2-1 scoreline in Thailand's favour. Rising to the occasion was an unsung hero, 20-year-old Ekanit Panya who played in only his third international appearance.
The young attacker set up Teerasil Dangda for the opener before latching on to Nitipong Selanon's pass to strike the match-winner as the War Elephants stunned the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 semi-finalists.

Pathum Thani: Head coach Akira Nishino has challenged Thailand to show that the win over United Arab Emirates in the Asian Qualifiers is just the start of a journey which will ultimately take the Southeast Asian team to the top of Asian football.
Goals by Teerasil Dangda and Eakkanit Punya either side of UAE's Ali Mabkhout scoring his sixth goal of the Asian Qualifiers at the Thammasat Stadium secured Thailand top spot in Group G with seven points after three matches.
Nishino, while congratulating his players on a fantastic performance, said there is still a long journey ahead for Thailand in their bid to compete with the Continent's best.

Pathum Thani: Thailand toppled the UAE off the top of Group G, defeating them 2-1 on Matchday Four of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Asian Qualifiers on Tuesday.
The War Elephants went into the game chasing a first home win to take them above leaders UAE at the summit of the group, while a draw would have been enough for the Whites to retain their place two points clear of their opponents.

Pathum Thani: Thailand were unable to begin their FIFA World Cup Qatar and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Asian Qualifiers campaign with a win, but head coach Akira Nishino believes Thursday’s 0-0 draw with Vietnam gives them something to build on.
Nishino’s first game in charge was a battle between fierce regional rivals, but neither could conjure a breakthrough goal at Thammasat Stadium, stretching Thailand’s winless run on home soil to five matches.
The Changsuek had won both encounters against Vietnam during the same round of qualifying in 2015, but, despite their inability to repeat that success on home soil, Nishino said the stalemate is a result from which his side can grow.

Reigning regional champions Vietnam and a Thai side in their first match under head coach Akira Nishino both had their moments in Pathum Thani, but neither managed to find the breakthrough required to make a winning start to their campaign.

Tashkent: Uzbekistan continued their resurgence under head coach Vadim Abramov, registering a 3-1 friendly win over Kyrgyz Republic at Pakhtakor Stadium on Saturday.
Uzbekistan 3-1 Kyrgyz Republic
Both sides used the match to prepare for key Asian Qualifiers in the week ahead, with Uzbekistan to host Saudi Arabia on Thursday, while Kyrgyz Republic are set to face Japan in Bishkek.
Pakhtakor duo Igor Sergeev and Dostonbek Khamdanov made the most of their familiar surrounds to find the back of the net before Jamshid Iskanderov slotted an excellent third for Uzbekistan, with Farkhat Musabkeov getting his name on the scoresheet for the visitors, who remain winless in eight attempts against their neighbours.
