Pyongyang: Captain Jong Il-gwan was a two-goal hero as DPR Korea beat Lebanon 2-0 in their opening Asian Qualifiers Group H match for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 on Thursday.
The tie was a rematch of when the two teams met in the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 last January with Lebanon securing a 4-1 win over the East Asians.
However, DPR Korea had gathered a steady momentum coming into the Qualifiers after emerging champions in the 2019 Intercontinental Cup two months ago.
Guam: Maldives got their FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Asian Qualifiers second round campaign off to a positive start, defeating Guam 1-0 in Group A on Thursday.
Maldives dominated the early proceedings and went ahead just before the half-hour mark at the GFA Stadium through Ibrahim Mahudhee's strike.
Guam, who overcame a one-goal first leg deficit to defeat Bhutan 5-1 in the first round of the Asian Qualifiers, could not find their way back into game in the second half as Maldives secured three valuable points.
Ulaanbaatar: Aramaa Dulguun wrote his name in the history books as his first-half strike earned Mongolia their first-ever win in the second phase of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup and AFC Asian Cup as Michael Weiss’s side handed Myanmar a surprise 1-0 defeat in Ulaanbaatar on Thursday.
Dulguun’s goal in the 17th minute was enough to see off a Myanmar side that played out the final quarter of the game with 10 men after Maung Maung Lwin was sent off for a second bookable offence, leaving Mongolia to pick up a landmark victory.
